Finding Peace – Grief & Loss Recovery

Day 83

All living beings have the same basic wish to be happy and avoid suffering, but very few people understand the real causes of happiness and suffering. We generally believe that external conditions such as food, friends, cars, and money are the real causes of happiness, and as a result we devote nearly all our time and energy to acquiring these.

When you lose some one you love deeply, then it becomes obvious: these external things are not the source of true happiness after all. True happiness resides in the loving relationships you have with others, including family, friends and our beloved pets.

Since happiness and suffering are opposites, someone who is a real cause of happiness cannot give rise to suffering. The suffering you’re experiencing today comes from within yourself, not from the being you’ve lost.

Your suffering is a state of mind, as is happiness. The real source of happiness is inner peace. When you know that, it is much easier to find peace…and happiness.

If our mind is peaceful – not racing from thought to thought, we shall be happy all the time, regardless of external conditions; but if it is disturbed or troubled in any way, we shall never be happy, no matter how good our external conditions may be.
